Program Notes
This piece represents streams of thought that may be experienced while standing still and doing nothing other than thinking and watching. It could be that you’re sitting outside watching people and notice things you wouldn’t normally notice… paying attention to
nature, perhaps… sitting in the woods alone. There is a moment when the saxophone performer is asked to improvise wildly (inspired by the music of Sun Ra) which represents a moment when one might become consciously aware for the first time that they’re not
doing anything and noticing things that are usually unnoticed, then noticing even more… and becoming somewhat overwhelmed.
Stand Still was written for David Polk in April of 2004 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana for his senior saxophone recital at Louisiana State University.
