Intentions (2000) for wind quintet
Instrumentation
Flute doubling Piccolo
Oboe doubling English Horn
Bb Clarinet doubling Eb Clarinet
Tenor Saxophone doubling Alto Saxophone
Bassoon
Program Notes
The title of the piece refers to its intent to be a traditional woodwind quintet… but replaces the French Horn with Tenor Saxophone. The second movement requires doubling by four of the performers – changing the instrumentation to piccolo, English horn, E-flat clarinet, and alto saxophone. The first two movements present multiple themes and motives in different styles. The third movement introduces more ideas until a point near the end when all the themes that were introduced in the entire work are heard simultaneously.
