Ants Running from a Charred Catfish (2005) for brass and percussion
Instrumentation
2 Trumpets in C
2 Horns in F
1 Trombone
1 Tuba
2 Percussionists
Program Notes
Ants Running From A Charred Catfish is a short character piece for brass and percussion that makes use of a single rhythmic ostinato throughout. The ostinato, which is a pattern of alternating groups of twos and threes, is set against an unchanging meter and tempo. The momentum starts immediately, like a machine or an ant pile that has been suddenly disturbed, and continues relentlessly until the very end; with a few hiccups and outbursts along the way.
